If you haven’t heard of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by now, you must have been living under a rock for a few years. It seems that new and exciting AI developments in a wide range of fields pop up in the news every week now.
I saw the article (link below) today, and wanted to repost it as it really could be a game changer in starting to combat the massive problems faced by medical professionals dealing with Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
According to estimates provided globally, the number of deaths directly linked to AMR has risen to more than 1.2 million in 2019 and this is forecast to increase to approximately 10 million deaths per year by 2050, if insufficient action is taken to control AMR (O’Neill J. Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. Tackling Drug-Resistant Infections Globally (2016)) So having a new generative AI model, named SyntheMol, developing potential new drugs that could be effective against AMR bacteria is a fantastic step forward.
I look forward to seeing how this develops in the next year or so.
